Short Mat Bowls Club
The Short Mat Bowls Club was formed in 1987 and members play on Tuesday evenings between 7.00pm and 9.30pm in the village hall.
An annual membership subscription of £10 for adults and £5 for Juniors is payable at the end of February after the Annual General Meeting. The weekly charge for playing is £1.50p, which includes refreshments.
Our maximum is 40 members, but we only have half that number at present, and anyone interested in trying short mat bowling is assured of a warm welcome, whether experienced bowlers or beginners. The club has several sets of bowling woods available for use but bowling shoes would be required. However you can play in socks until you wish to purchase the correct bowling, tuition would be given.
We run various competitions within the membership each year [playing is optional] and the winners are presented with trophies.
During the last 23 years members of the club have entered many competitions both locally and nationally, and also play none competitive matches against other local clubs.
During the early 1990s the club’s team of 10 players won the Roger and Mary Gardener South West KO competition twice and attended the finals at Exeter on a number of occasions.
Teams of 10 players have been playing in the Taunton and District Bowls League for 20 years, against other bowling clubs. This League is played between September and March on a home and away basis. Unfortunately we only have enough members to enter one team now that our membership has reduced.
